Ashes to Ashes

So the redoubtable John Howard
Has proved himself no coward.
Look, he’s stepped up to the wicket
To seek a role in worldwide cricket.
When first it looked as if he’d win
We saw again that old familiar grin.
Now he’s sounding sad and sour
On hearing he’ll not get the power
To control an international game
In spite of his domestic fame.

Perhaps that is the very reason
He’s not selected for this season.
Surely the ICC would not choose a
Man as leader, now famous as a loser
In cricket’s happiest home, Australia.
And now as if to underline his failure,
Here’s Gillard being oh so gracious,
A woman Howard knows to be mendacious.
He doesn’t want our new PM’s support,
Her name in headlines which for himself he sought.

Now she’s showing how to play the game!
Politics in Oz, it’s clear, will never be the same.
After all those years of ruthless sledging
What is there to show for all his wily wedging?
His team’s all out! There’s ALP incumbency!
The country has a female captaincy!
Fighting back, he’s coaching twelfth man Abbott
But even he is turning out to be a rabbit.
Poor John, his old touch seems to’ve lost its magic.
It’s time to walk. Clearly he’s not just a cricket tragic.

Howzat!

So the redoubtable John Howard
Has proved himself no coward.
He’s stepped up to the wicket
To seek a role in worldwide cricket.

Perhaps that is the very reason
He’s not selected for this season.
Surely the ICC would not choose a
Man as leader, now famous as a loser
In cricket’s happiest home, Australia.
There association with the idea of failure
Means Howard’s name has lost its magic.
Now this rejection! He really is a cricket tragic.

Beyond Blue?

Perhaps it isn’t so surprising
When Julia Gillard’s stocks are rising,
That Abbott, whom we always thought was mad,
In case election loss leaves him and others sad,
Is doing everything he knows is possible
To make sure there is a place in hospital
For anyone and everyone who’s blue.
Why them?   Not those of any other hue?
Of course not!   Only that group will need a bed.
The cheerful ones will all be red.

“But the Way It Was Done!”

Why shouldn’t Julia have behaved like a man?
Why should her win have been thoroughly square,
The first of its kind, historically fair?
Must she win our approval and get a back pat?
Should our PM be a woman like that?
Why shouldn’t she do what all the blokes do
And show that she knows how to use her head?
Why must she behave like mothers used to,
Why weep ‘cos she’s more like her father instead?
Why not simply be glad it’s not just her hair that is red.

Mutatis Mutandis –

‘Necesssary Changes Have Been Made.’

We held our leader in high regard,
Watched helpless as he was daily mauled
By media and an opposition fighting hard
And dirty, with no holds barred.
And finally when he lay bleeding,
Victim of press gallery canard,
Yes, we killed him because we knew
He was near dead, so battle scarred
And bruised he could never rise again.
So much his reputation marred
Our cause, also dear to him, looked lost.
No choice but for the old praetorian guard
To take control and end a tragic farce.
This was no assassination.
It was an end to suffering; a ‘coup de grace.’

‘Alea Iacta Est’ – The Die Is Cast!

‘Alea iacta est.’   The die is cast.
Rudd has nailed his colours to the mast.
Many here are low and woebegone
As he prepares to cross his Rubicon.
These words, echoes of an empire past,
Remind us; all passes, nothing lasts.
Yesterday he was the man of the hour
Held high office and exercised power.
Tomorrow much to our and his chagrin
It could be gone – gone with the wind.

Ah yes, what did Scarlett O’Hara say?

“Tomorrow is another day!”

“Let Tony Talk!”

We want to hear this man
Not just see him on his bike
Or watch his angry walk.
Please just let him have that mike.
Then he can tell us what he feels
About our boys in Afghanistan.
Is he still as much a hawk?
And what about the Telstra deals
The government’s done?
Perhaps he really wouldn’t like
To admit that there they won.
And China signing up for years
To buy our minerals and ore?
Twiggy hand in hand with Rudd,
Didn’t that make him feel sore
To watch the man he calls a dud
And hear his fluent Mandarin,
So confident, not a sign of tears
Or upset about this latest poll?
Does he think he still can win?
We all need help to solve the puzzle
Of why Rudd’s still PM preferred.
Bronzed Aussie often on a surfing roll
Still running second to the nerd?
Come on, Tony, talk to us. Take off the muzzle!

Special Treatment For A Special State?

Message to Government and the ALP
From the West Australian Citizenry.
It was our glorious mining industry
Which saved Australia from the GFC.

That’s why this new tax, the RSPT,
Levied on our own home grown company
Owned by generous billionaireTwiggy,
Must be cancelled, immediately.

Or this the second time ’twill be
W.A. becomes secessionary!
Then the world will really see
What it means to dig for victory!

An ‘Inside-Out’ View Of Things

I am told by the Insiders,
On the national news provider,
That Labor’s brand’s been trashed.
Their electoral hopes are dashed.
That’s what they say the papers say.
I wonder if it really is that way?
They didn’t say the economy has ailed
To show how government has failed.
Nor asked why we are overjoyed
So few of us are unemployed.
Instead they claim our PM and his ruling clique
Have shown themselves to be too weak
In letting the Coalition win on the ETS
Supported by the Greens not saying yes.
They talked of members of the ALP
Whispering tales of disunity.
Caucus is scared and Rudd’s so grim
They will not publicly stand up to him.
That’s right.  In private he’s said to be so tough
They cannot tell their leader he’s not tough enough!
Of course this is the Land Downunder
But, really, is it any wonder,
I feel as if the world’s turned upside down,
When a government internationally renowned
For strong, effective decisive action
Is dragged down by the damaging distraction
Of media commentators turning truth about.
Isn’t there some way to turn ‘Insiders’ out?

A Broadcasting Legend

I’m informally told by Mr. David Marr
There is nothing at all bizarre
In last night’s conduct of Kerry O’Brien
Which was typical of an aging lion.

It should be seen as a last and mighty roar
Before death arrives and he is heard no more.
Wrongly interpreted by some as hubris
He is suffering the ‘fading star’ neurosis.

Of late he feels the loss of former power
And seeks out easy game to torture and devour
Before his audience, and doesn’t give a damn
Whether or not his victim really is a lamb.

So as he ambles off, with mind and faculties grown dim,
Will he see, as friendly childhood ‘forests’ call to him,
The vengeful wolf who lopes behind with loathing,
In his mouth a bloodied skin, yesterday’s protective clothing?

adrian J une 18, 2010 Hey Patricia WA, you bring a certain class to this ‘umble blog.

Tim Macknay June 18, 2010 Very nice, Patricia WA @52. The last verse is particularly evocative.
