Coalition Campaign Tactics

Coalition Electioneering
So far is Tony Abbott jeering.
Peter Costello’s done some sneering.
Somehow they think that’s all endearing,
Pulling all those swinging voters in
As they complain about Labor’s spin.
If that’s their strategy to win
Polling must be causing them chagrin.
Julia Gillard has a cheeky smile.
People respond to her friendly style.
Is this the ‘spin’ they mean? This the guile,
Making her a winner by a mile?

Picking Winners With Octopussy, An Octopode.

Thank you Philip, and you as well, Lenore,
With the SMH you two have now gone
Where none in Oz has dared to go before,
Reviving the spirit of the long dead,
Cassandra.

You have now chosen to reincarnate
The great soothsayer of an ancient world
In this intelligent invertebrate,
So familiar to us here in the land
Downunder.

We know that many other octopodes
Wear the deceiving,  tainted,  colour blue.
She’s different.  Her first prediction bodes
Labor well.  They have a female leader  just like her!
No wonder!

NOTES This pome was written for larvatus prodeo when Saturday Salon was discussing Julia Gillard’s chances against Tony Abbott in the upcoming election as divined by an octopus in the Sydney Zoo and reported bY Lenore Taylor and Phil Coorey.

Work Choices Dead?

Have those dreadful laws
Truly been cremated?
Abbott,  to applause,
Very clearly stated
On Election Eve
This Act so hated,
We must indeed believe,
Is now just ashes.

Howard has their urn.
Does it comfort him,
Promising return
Of other glories
To ‘his’ Australia?
Or echo sad stories
Of his team’s failure,
Then loss of Ashes?

Meanwhile Abbott schemes
Through this campaign.
When it’s won, he dreams
Of how he will regain,
That ceded ground.
Then with new life again
Work Choices will rebound
From their dead Ashes.

NOTES: This pome written for larvatus prodeo when Saturday Salon was discussing the upcoming election and the part that could be played by union muscle if Work Choices and John Howard featured in Coalition policy.

first draft as written for Blogmaster, Mark Bahnisch.

Work Choices Dead?

Yes those dreadful laws
Have been cremated.
Abbott has found cause
Perhaps belated
Why we can believe
An Act so hated
On election’s eve
Is now just ashes.

Howard has their urn.
Does it comfort him,
Promising return
Of other trophies
To his Australia,
Ending those stories
Of his team’s failure
And loss of Ashes?

Meanwhile Abbott schemes,
Works through this campaign.
When it’s won, he dreams,
Of that one major aim,
The reformation
Of industrial law!
Work Choices rising
From its dead ashes?

No, not reincarnation!
For Abbott that’s profane.
Howard can talk of the‘Phoenix’
When he can touch again
That other urn which holds
Those truly sacred Ashes.

Does It Have To Be A Dirty Campaign?

Of course the campaign will be dirty.
Ask any candidate over thirty.
Go in for insults! Do some inciting!
Whatever it takes,  make sure it’s exciting!
Without muck raking and scandal and spin
They can’t get it up.     And they won’t get in.

Or
Believe me it’s more than just spin.
If they don’t get it up – they can’t win.
It’s the only sure way to get in.

Welsh Strains.

Our PM states she has no religion;.
None at all, no, not even a smidgen
Of faith in a God or some afterlife.
Perhaps because she has seen the strife
So often caused by strong belief
Which leads to warfare, deaths and grief.
Now she is the leader of our nation
She should consider Reincarnation
As the ideal Australian opiate.
That would strike and surely reverberate!.
Here she is recognised, praised and seen
To be much like the Tudor Virgin Queen.
They have in common ancestries in Wales,
Giving rise to wondrous and mystic tales,
Of another Celt, mighty Boadicea
Whose spirit surely once again lives – here!
Having left the climes of Borealis
Does she now dwell with us in Terra Australis?

NOTES:

This video clip was sent to me by an admirer of Julia Gillard, my say, blogging at the Poll Bludger on September 3, 2011, when the Prime Minister was certainly in need of friends, and who spoke of her Welsh fighting spirit. Watching this clip of several film stars depicting Queen Elizabeth 1 I was very struck by some of the physical stances and facial expressions. Coincidence? Or my imagination?

POSTSCRIPT 08/11/11 Today, the day of the Senate’s final passage of the Carbon Price legislation there were compliments galore for Julia Gillard’s leadership courage and staying power on website postings everywhere, including this from Bushfire Bill at The Pollbludger by by posting Welsh Strains for him.

Gillard looked very Queen Elizabeth (QE-1, Queens Bess, that is) with her minimal makeup, red hair and pale complexion.
http://pandorasarchive.wikispaces.com/file/view/elizabeth.jpg/104064661/elizabeth.jpg And come to think of it, Abbott looks very “Norfolk-ish”. http://www.wearysloth.com/Gallery/ActorsE/5117-24173.jpg See what I mean, (if you’ve seen the film).”

The blogmaster himself, William Bowe, particularly liked BB’s comment and responded with, She may have the body of a weak and feeble woman, but she has the heart and stomach of a concrete elephant.

COMMENTS:

my say, 03/09/11 Here’s that video for you.

Patricia WA, 03/09/11 my say, many thanks for that! Just added it to my notes on my pome with acknowledgement. Call me a romantic but I just hate to think of Oz missing out on a similar spirit!

Sue,    25/04/12,     Thank you for the link from the Cafe.   I love your poems and I appreciate the depth of regard you have for our wonderful PM.

Mary,    22/08/12,    http://www.theanneboleynfiles.com/18181/elizabeth-is-death-24-march-1603/  Patricia,    This web site leads to others, love the comments underneath

Gorgeous Dunny, 22/08/12, She hasn’t let us down, has she? Every day her fortitude reminds us how little our task is compared with hers. All we need to do is trust her strength and leadership and continue to applaud every time she finds a way out of yet another trap set by her enemies as she withstands their slanderous attacks. You’re every bit as eloquent with your prose as you are with your witty poems. Glad to hear you’re doing well, and sorry for the slow catch-up.

Truth Seeker, 22/08/12m Patricia, I always appreciate your feedback, as I always enjoy your verse, and have found your latest, short posts, particularly concise, poignant and hard hitting. Good work.

Who is Julia?

.
Who is Julia? What is she
That press around her cluster?
Loyal, fair, and wise was she;
Made even Kevin trust her
And let her so admired be.

Is she kind and is she fair?
These boats require her kindness.
Desperate people need her care.
We know this woman’s childless.
What sort of heart is beating there?

Let’s hope to Julia we can sing,
That yes, she is excelling;
Excels at every mortal thing
On which the media is dwelling:
And to us she’ll victory bring!

The Never Never Party!

Was it so very long ago,
They said,  so loud and clear
On tele, print and radio,
In words that all could hear,
Australia would never see,
While Liberals were empowered,
The oft rejected GST.
‘Never Ever!’ said John Howard.

Now we hear again from Abbott,
That Work Choices is dead.
Then, as per his usual habit,
Echoes what John Howard said.
Using words so reminiscent
Has he been too clever?
Or is he here just prescient,
‘N Knows he’s lost forever?

Is This The Latest Message From Oz To Boat People?

We know your stories one and all,
Widow, orphan, soldier amputee.
And how you strove to reach landfall
Here beyond the Arafura Sea.
We know that if you came by boat
People smugglers charged a hefty fee.
Well,  now you can get a lower rate,
With journey’s end before the Timor Sea.
This lessening of your suffering
Comes courtesy of the ALP,
Anxious to find a buffering
Between Oz and the surrounding sea.
You who are here to seek refuge
Must understand  it’s already sanctuary
For people whose anxiety is huge,
Girt as Australia is by sea.

A Rose By Any Other Name

Is it the name that is your enemy?
Those few words ‘Resource Super Profits Tax?’
Is it ‘Profits’ that does not say it well?
Perhaps ‘Super’ – or any other part
Put forward by that man?    O, choose some other name!
What’s in a name? That which we call a rose
By any other name will smell as sweet;
‘Super Profits’ if not so crudely named
Would keep its dear perfection and still owe,
Without that title, much to us. Change the name!
And for that change still pay a ‘Rental’ tax.
Then leave me be!

Chance or Opportunity?

Another time, another place,
Or even of a different race,
This child might not survive.
Yet here she is alive,
Living in prosperity.
This girl-child’s father and mother
Had no constraint to smother
Her, or choose to hide
While waiting for a ride
To hope across an open sea.
This little one, weak in her chest,
Was able still to pass the test
For passage to Australia.
No risk there of failure,
An ideal migrant family!
That child is grown and powerful now.
Does she ever wonder how
It happened, and what would have become
Of her, if not a ten pound Pom,
She’d been instead a refugee?
