True Liberty Is When Free-born Men Speak Free

Milton’s  “Areopagitica”
Cried freedom for the press.
Its victory played a major role
In democracy’s progress.
Today some beneficiaries
Of his eloquent address
Would use that very freedom
As a weapon to oppress.
‘Freedom’ is their ’license’
To name and to suppress
Those who strongly criticize
The power of the press.

Tony Abbott As Mamil

I woke up this morning feeling brain dead,
With no inspiration,  not even a shred.
Why did I ever dream up this thread?
My favorite colour has always been pink!
Connect it with Abbott?   I must need a shrink!
So am I excused if I have a re-think?
There are very few words rhyming with mamil.
An obvious one which comes up is the camel.
There’s also a net or a trap called a trammel.
But none have inspired to any degree.
We should have respect for the dromedary.
He’s much better looking than Abbott.   Agree?

gorgeousdunny1, 02/05/13, PatriciaWA, Abbott in Pink? We do have this

Patriciawa,
03/05/13, Many thanks, gorgeousdunny1, I’ve been able to insert that into my Mamil pome, written in the days before I was across illustrating my verses, let alone storing them which I eventually did retrospectively at the urging of my grandsons, and with the help of Miglo the very generous blogmaster of Cafe Whispers. Quite apart from their being a fun form of mental calisthenics writing these pomes has been a great way of occasionally participating in the national debate when posts or comments particularly stir me up as I visit those blog sites with whose lefty perspective I generally empathise.

Is ‘Poisoned Prawn’ The Name Of A Game?

Action Man Abbott was caught off his guard,
As all lively he stepped off the plane
To respond to a comment earlier made by Gillard.
His meaning was plain.
He couldn’t see gain
Being where war was aflame.
He’d seek his own fame.
He’d not be a pawn in her game.

The news commentators went wild, wouldn’t stop.
Kept repeating his words to his shame.
Our brave soldiers he’d use, they accused, like a prop
For his next photo op.
Our poor soldiers remain
On the Afghani plain.
No praise for their pain!
Yes, Abbott’s to blame!
Our troops are just pawns in his game.

His own party hacks now crawl out of the cracks,
Fearing his future is dim.
They come up with a line ‘the Australian’ backs.
Gillard’s to blame and not him!
Abbott’s quick to agree,
“I was her pawn, doncha see?”
When she hears all the lies
The PM just sighs,
With a roll of her eyes,
Before her reply,
Received with acclaim,
“Tone’s the raw prawn!  Checkmate!  My game!”
.
nasking October 8, 2010  About sums it up.

Hillbilly Skeleton October 9. 2010  Go! Patricia WA! And keep the humourous vignettes flowing because nothing disarms the angry and frustrated better than being made an object of satirical ridicule, put on the table in front of them and out there for the world to see.

‘A Poisoned Prawn?’

A journalist caught Abbott off his guard.
Just awake, he was stepping off the plane.
His comment on a statement by Gillard
Was un-Australian, verging on insane.
Newspaper headlines were all aflame.
Editorials bemoaned his party’s shame.
But Abbott stared them down and made the claim,
“That’s wrong!  I’m just a pawn in Gillard’s game.”

“She made me say that I would rather sleep
Than see our soldiers.  It’s a cunning ploy,
So typical of her!   So sly and cheap
To use our fighting men as a decoy.”
Thinks Gillard,  “Pawn in my game?  Let me see,
That’s not ‘Strine.’  It’s a chess analogy!”
She grins into the camera and says ” Toneee!
Please!  Don’t try to come the raw prawn with me!”

Augustus,   October 07, 2010,   Patricia, Your pome reminds me of that Dylan classic, “Desolation Row.”

Tony Really Was Telling the Truth!

This time we do believe him.
This time he told it true.
This trip to London was no whim.
He had important things to do.
The media have got it wrong.
His priority really was the war.
He had to wake up fit and strong
For battle on a distant shore.
David Cameron, the big Tory,
Just returned from Afghanistan,
May know the way to victory.
He’d willingly tell Abbot all he can
About his talks with Hamid Karzai
Of Bin Laden and the Taliban,
And the cause for which our soldiers die.

But Tony didn’t go to talk of that sad land where terror rules.
He was there to seek advice on how to win his war with Jules.

NOTES     Just that once!

Min,   05/10/2010.   Thank you Patricia. A ripper!  Quite right..great visualisation there..Abbott had to wake up fit and strong to meet the British Tories.  I can imagine that and one not to be denied, Tone probably needed all the stamina that he could muster for that meeting.

Feral Skeleton,  05/10/2010.  Your poems are a joy to behold and I feel privileged that you grace us with them. Such a wicked sense of humour too!

Miglo,  05/10/2010.  Patricia, another gem from your golden pen.  Have you ever thought of publishing a book?

Abbott’s Staged Fights In Canberra

Ingenious and ingenuous,
With policies most tenuous,
Abbott may be strenuous
But is he really strong?
He doesn’t wait to hear the gong.
Out he comes, gloves on,
Throwing verbiage to left and right,
He’s looking for a dirty fight.
But Julia holds back.  Her jacket’s white.
Smilingly, she avoids the mud.
She’s strong,  we know.  Just think of Rudd.
She waits.  She’ll choose her time to have his blood.

Hillbilly Skeleton October 4 2010  Patricia WA, I wish I could write poetry.  I’m glad you can.

NormanK October 4. 2010  Patricia WA  Your poems are a great delight – funny but with considerable sting in their tails.

The Right to Rule Over the Left Party.

There’s a movement in the nation; the word is doing all the rounds.
TPS has heard of it from Norman K.
Bloggers flock to join him to discuss their common grounds:
The ‘T’ bagging potential of jj!
Once latte lapping lefties are now bowing to this ‘Power
Of (T)one!’ Ad Astra should not feel bereft.
jj may lead The ‘T’ Party, but real man of the hour
Is ‘Tone’ whose trust in his own Right to Rule is all that he has left.

MY NOTE  This was a teasing response to  jj, a ‘rightist’ blogger on the Political Sword, a very left of centre site where he is overwhelmingly,  but politely,  outnumbered by the likes of Norman K.

Pees & Queues For Members When In Parliamentary Chambers?

Our lovely lady PM, Jules,
Has introduced some thoughtful rules
To help other ladies in the House
Necessitated by that louse,
Abbott, and his policy on pairs.
“And for the men?”  you ask.  Who cares!
It is easier, remember,
When you are, and have, a member!
If you’re male and want to pee
You can stand and handle it, but we,
Even without occasion to excrete,
Will always need a cubicle with seat.
You men will never have to queue
And then have someone hassle you
To hurry up,  as they start to yell,
“They’re ringing the Division Bell!”
So now there’s an arrangement for
Lots of ‘Ladies’ near the Chamber door.
Sensitive to a need for clemency
In cases of late pregnancy,
After lobbying by Rob Oakeshott,
There’s provision too for a ‘Chamber’ pot.

Fun And Games In Canberra

It’s hard to describe the state of play
On this new Parliament’s first sitting day.
Both sides were playing hard,  ‘Hunt the Speaker,’
With Tony strong, Julia looking weaker.
With her lead on votes whittled down to one
He planned other moves to bring her undone.
He’d had some setbacks in the days before
When Somlyay might have improved her score.
Then Peter Slipper was briefly lost
And Tony thought he’d been double crossed.
But Slipper reappeared, and on the day
The Speaker’s game, it seemed, went Tony’s way.
Then in the second round everything changed.
Somehow secretly Julia had arranged
To play her own game, though still by the rules.
She beat Tony’s team and made them look fools.
Her win this time, for which we thank heaven,
Was not by one, but a majority of seven!
That Deputy Speaker vote, what a ripper!
Julia’s real good at playing games!   Specially  ‘Hunt the Slipper!’

Tony Abbott Joined In His Time Tunnel By Cardinal Pell

If Cardinal Pell
Knew women well
He wouldn’t opine
We’re in decline
Due to the role
Of birth control.
Through all the years
And all the tears
From emancipation
To wider liberation
It’s my perception
That contraception
More than education
Was our salvation.
A medical solution,
It brought resolution
To sexual inequity
With equal opportunity.
He can think what he will,
I say, God bless the pill!

MY NOTE   This was a response to an article by Cardinal Pell in the Australian.
